National Cultural Council (MAKEN)

The highest platform that brings together representatives from the arts, culture and heritage sectors to discuss cultural matters, and to provide advice, views and recommendations to the Government and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC).

Introduction

The National Cultural Council (MAKEN) is an independent body established outside the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), which serves to provide advice, views and recommendations to MOTAC and the Government on the development, progress and empowerment of policies related to arts, culture and heritage affairs.

This council was established as the highest platform involving representatives from the arts, culture and heritage sectors across various fields to discuss issues related to the nation’s culture and arts.

Main Functions

Role of MAKEN

  • To provide advisory services through consultation and discussion with MOTAC on cultural matters, including developments at the international level.
  • To present views on improving the implementation of cultural programmes in line with the National Culture Policy (DAKEN).
  • To propose recommendations and new ideas related to the direction of the nation’s cultural development.

Nature of Function

MAKEN does not possess absolute authority over the matters discussed. All decisions are in the form of advice, views or recommendations decided during meetings or recorded in official reports.

Background

Members of the council consist of distinguished individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds approved by the Ministry’s top management and appointed by the Minister on the advice of the Secretary-General.

The members appointed by the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture for the 2025–2027 session total 12 persons.
