PROSECUTION OF CASE AGAINST BROADCAST BUS OWNER INVOLVING ACCIDENT OF SULTAN IDRIS UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION (UPSI) STUDENTS

PUTRAJAYA, 6 November 2025 – The Gerik Magistrate’s Court, Perak on 3 November 2025 convicted Kenari Utara Travel & Tours Sdn. Bhd. (Company No.: 806799-V) on two charges under Regulation 6(1)(f) of the Tourism Industry Regulations 1992 [P.U.(A) 333/1992] for failing to comply with the conditions of the license which prohibits transactions with unlicensed parties.

The company pleaded guilty to the offence of selling a tour bus with registration number PLD 8892 and renting the vehicle permit to Noreen Maju Trading (Business Registration No.: 202003054997), an entity that carried out a tour operating business without a license under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 [Act 482].

Tragedy struck on June 9, 2025 when bus PLD 8892 operated by Noreen Maju Trading was involved in a fatal accident in Gerik, Perak, while carrying a group of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students back to the Tanjung Malim campus.

Magistrate’s Court Judge, Tuan Muhammad Firdaus bin Nor Azlan, imposed a fine of RM10,000 for each charge, making a total of RM20,000. Failure to pay can result in a prison sentence of up to five (5) years. The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Puan Siti Zulaikha binti Mahadi, together with MOTAC Prosecuting Officer, Puan Nurul Hidayah binti Aman.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) stresses that violations of Act 482 and its regulations constitute serious criminal offenses. MOTAC is committed to taking stern action against any party that threatens the security and integrity of the country’s tourism industry.
