INCIDENT INVOLVING TOURISTS FROM TAIWAN THAT OCCURRED IN SEMPORNA, SABAH

PUTRAJAYA, 24 July 2025 – The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) views seriously the incident involving a tourist from Taiwan who was roughed up by a freediving instructor in Semporna, Sabah on 23 July 2025. This incident is also linked to a tour operator company licensed under MOTAC.

MOTAC appreciates the prompt action of the police who have detained the suspect for further investigation. This case is being investigated under the relevant provisions of the law and MOTAC will continue to closely monitor the progress of the investigation.

At the same time, MOTAC is also conducting an investigation into the tour operator company involved and will take appropriate action under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 [Act 482] if any violation of the legal provisions is found.

MOTAC stressed that all tourism operators must comply with the law, maintain professionalism and ensure that tourist safety is given priority in all aspects of the services offered. The safety of tourists, whether local or international, is always a priority in order to maintain Malaysia’s reputation as a world-class tourist destination.
