PARIS, 11 July 2025 | Malaysia has achieved international success for the second time in a row when the Forest Research Institute Malaysia Forest Park Selangor (FRIM FPS) was officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The listing was announced during the 47th World Heritage Committee session which took place from 6 – 16 July 2025 at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.
This highest recognition at the world level was decided by the 21 member States of the World Heritage Committee, chaired by Prof. Nikolay Nenov from Bulgaria. Preparations for the nomination of this site have been underway since 2013.
FRIM FPS is a special site and was one of the earliest initiatives to restore a large-scale tropical forest ecosystem through tree replanting in former tin mining areas. This effort has set an international benchmark by successfully creating an ecosystem that closely resembles a natural tropical rainforest, complete with a high diversity of tree species and a rich biodiversity composition.
With this success, Malaysia has successfully listed six (6) UNESCO World Heritage Sites in total. The previous listings consist of Kinabalu Park (2000), Gunung Mulu National Park (2000), the Historic Towns of the Straits of Malacca, Melaka and George Town (2008), the Archaeological Heritage of the Lenggong Valley (2012) and the Archaeological Heritage of the Niah National Park Cave Complex (2024).
This success demonstrates the country’s continued commitment to protecting and preserving natural and cultural sites of outstanding universal value. This recognition will also indirectly increase Malaysia’s visibility in the eyes of the world. To date, a total of 1223 sites from around the world have been successfully recognized as World Heritage Sites under the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
Gratitude is also extended to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education of Malaysia through the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO (SKUM) and the Permanent Delegation of Malaysia to UNESCO in Paris for their role in garnering support for FRIM FPS’s nomination at the international level. All these efforts and synergies reflect the spirit of MADANI Malaysia which emphasises the principles of inclusiveness, togetherness and sustainability in order to uphold the country’s heritage at the international level.
The Ministry is optimistic that this recognition will inject significant added value to FRIM FPS as one of the main tourism products in the State of Selangor. In line with the implementation of Visit Malaysia 2026 and Visit Selangor Year 2025, this success is hoped to increase the arrival of foreign tourists to Malaysia while also contributing to the generation of the Malaysian economy, especially the local community.
