PUTRAJAYA, 12 June 2025 – The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) expresses its deepest sympathy and condolences for the accident that befell a group of students from the Sultan Idris University of Education (UPSI) which occurred on 9 June 2025, at around 1:10 am, at KM 53 of the East-West Highway, Banun, Gerik, Perak.
MOTAC acted immediately upon receiving the report of the accident and initiated an investigation under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 [Act 482] and issued inspection notices and show cause letters to the business entities involved. MOTAC also visited the victims and their families involved in the accident.
MOTAC will also work with relevant enforcement agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) and Road Transport Department (JPJ) to complete the investigation in accordance with the provisions of the law so that appropriate punishment is imposed for the offence and the victim receives appropriate defense. Further action will be taken after the investigation is completed.
MOTAC would like to reiterate its commitment to ensuring that tourism activities in Malaysia are always carried out safely, ethically and beneficially for future generations. MOTAC expresses its condolences to all the families of the victims and prays for a speedy recovery for all the injured students.
