NATIONAL SEMINAR: IMPROVEMENTS TO ACT 482 TO STRENGTHEN THE GOVERNANCE OF THE NATIONAL TOURISM INDUSTRY

Putrajaya, 14 May 2025 – In line with the MADANI Government’s aspirations to strengthen governance and empower high-impact industries, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has organised a National Seminar on the Study of Regulatory Effectiveness in Addressing Issues and Challenges of the Tourism Industry in Malaysia held at The Everly Hotel, Putrajaya. The seminar was officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Shaharuddin Abu Sohot, Secretary-General of MOTAC.

The seminar was attended by 102 participants consisting of representatives of Government agencies and tourism industry players. It was an important platform to inform all stakeholders of the results of the study on the proposed amendments to the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482). This session also aimed to obtain feedback to ensure that the process of reviewing the act was carried out inclusively and took into account the views of all parties.

The review of Act 482 was initiated in August 2023 through the implementation of 54 engagement sessions involving nearly 1,000 stakeholders including representatives of ministries, agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and tourism industry players from home and abroad. Among the main proposed amendments are improvements to licensing aspects, insurance coverage, strengthening enforcement, registration of digital platforms and the establishment of a Tourism Tribunal. The amendment to the act is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.

MOTAC is confident that the amendment to Act 482 will propel Malaysia as a sustainable, safe, culturally rich and competitive tourism destination, in line with the principles of inclusiveness and reform outlined under the idea of MADANI Malaysia, especially in conjunction with the implementation of the Visit Malaysia 2026 Campaign.
