PUTRAJAYA, 26 February 2025 – Following reports circulating on social media regarding the cancellation of flights by an umrah operating company involving more than 300 umrah pilgrims on 14 January 2025, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) conducted an inspection of its premises on the same day for investigation purposes.
To date, MOTAC has received eight (8) complaints with a total loss of RM180,116.00 against the Umrah operating company in question. Initial investigation found that the Umrah operating company in question had committed a violation of the Tourism Industry Act 1992 [Act 482] and MOTAC has taken immediate action by suspending the company’s license.
During the period of this license suspension, the company has been advised to complete all trips that have been booked/paid for and not to make any new transactions including not to advertise the sale of packages and immediately return the payment as well as any documents belonging to the Umrah pilgrims that have been taken from the pilgrims who chose to cancel the booking. Further investigation is still ongoing under Act 482 regarding the material changes in the Umrah packages offered.
Previous records show that the company has been compounded two (2) times. MOTAC is committed to protecting the interests of the people and ensuring that the licensed tourism industry continues to operate with integrity. Travel agencies are reminded to conduct business responsibly and comply with all regulations. MOTAC will not hesitate to take strict action against those who violate the regulations and cause losses to customers.
