MALAYSIA CALLS FOR A MORE RESILIENT, SUSTAINABLE ASEAN TOURISM SECTOR IN MANILA

This statement highlights Malaysia’s participation in the 2nd ASEAN Tourism Ministers’ Retreat and the ASEAN Tourism Investment Showcase held in Manila, Philippines, where Malaysia called for a more resilient, sustainable and future-ready ASEAN tourism sector. Malaysia voiced its support for the review and update of the ASEAN Tourism Agreement to address current priorities including digitalization and governance, sustainability and climate change, crisis management, evolving ASEAN tourism roadmaps and the integration of Timor-Leste as an ASEAN Member State.

Malaysia also shared measures to strengthen tourism resilience through source market diversification, attracting high-value visitors, encouraging domestic travel and enhancing air connectivity. The Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 Campaign will further support international demand and regional travel confidence. Malaysia also reaffirmed its role as Co-Lead Country with the Philippines in developing ASEAN Tourism Intelligence to strengthen evidence-based decision-making through reliable statistics and shared regional insights.

At the ASEAN Tourism Investment Showcase, Malaysia highlighted opportunities for sustainable and inclusive investment in green infrastructure, nature- and community-based tourism, sustainable mobility, and the preservation of arts, culture and heritage. Malaysia remains committed to advancing an innovative and inclusive ASEAN tourism sector that creates lasting and equitable benefits for communities, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI.
