PUTRAJAYA, 28 APRIL 2025 – The Government of Malaysia, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of the Republic of Maldives to strengthen bilateral relations and expand strategic cooperation in the tourism sector. The MoU was signed in conjunction with the Official Visit of the President of the Republic of Maldives to Malaysia.
The MoU exchange ceremony was held at Perdana Putra, witnessed by YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, and TYT Dr Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives. YB Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, represented YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture at the ceremony.
This MoU outlines a comprehensive framework for cooperation in several key areas of mutual interest, including:
• joint promotion and marketing of tourism destinations,
• exchange of expertise and capacity building training programmes,
• development of Muslim-friendly tourism,
• strengthening of business event tourism (MICE),
• promotion of ecotourism, and
• support for community-based tourism initiatives.
The signing of this MoU is a significant milestone in Malaysia-Maldives relations and demonstrates the shared commitment of both countries to advance sustainable tourism development. It also opens up wider space for more active engagement between the government and the private sector, thus stimulating economic opportunities and cultural exchange.
Malaysia hopes to work closely with the Maldives to realise these aspirations into tangible results and benefit the tourism industries of both countries.
