The 13th Asean Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council Meeting

MELAKA, 26 March 2015 - ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Ministers who convened here today for the 13th ASCC Council Meeting to deliberate on realizing an ASEAN Community that is people-centred and socially responsible by forging a common identity and building a caring and sharing society.

"In this respect I believe that today's meeting will further enhance our understanding as communicators, coordinators and socio-cultural aspirators. This also shows our affirmation to see the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community that is truly "People-Centered" and socially responsible with a view to achieving enduring solidarity and unity among the nations of ASEAN.," said Minister of Tourism and Culture, YB Dato' Seri Mohamed Nazri Tan Sri Abdul Aziz, during his speech at the Opening Ceremony of the ASCC Council Meeting.

The meeting was launched by the Governer of the State of Melaka, His Excellency Tun Datuk Seri Utama Mohd Khalil bin Yaakob. Also present was the Chief Minister of Melaka, Datuk Seri Ir. Hj. Idris bin Hj. Haron.

The ASCC Meeting will see ASEAN Socio-Cultural Ministers deliberate and exchange their views on issues that are in relation to the emerging socio-cultural trends, current challenges as well as the way to move forward to the realisation of the ASEAN Community by 2015 year end. These would cover the key areas of human development, social welfare and protection, social justice and rights, environmental sustainability, building an ASEAN identity and narrowing the development gap.

The outcome from the ASCC Council meeting will be brought to the attention of all Leaders of ASEAN Member States at the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur in April 2015.

Malaysia had assumed the ASEAN Chairmanship on January 1, taking over from Myanmar and its theme for the chairmanship is "Our People, Our Community, Our Vision.
