Malaysia Wins Tourism Awards In Berlin

MALAYSIA WINS TOURISM AWARDS IN BERLIN
Malaysia received several recognitions at the ITB Berlin 2010, a leading international tourism trade event held annually.

Westin Langkawi won the gold award at ITB's Golden City Gate awards, dubbed the travel industry's Oscars, for its online website www.westin.com/langkawi. The Sarawak Convention Bureau was also recognized for its MICE promotional video, "Recharge in a New World - Changing Perspectives," which won the silver prize in the regional category, while Tourism Malaysia received the bronze award for its Truly Asia travel video.

The Golden City Gate awards offers a platform to cities, communities, economic regions, airports, carriers and the tourism sector to present their movies to a professional and interested audience. Some 103 movies from 32 countries competed in nine categories.

The 7th Go Asia Awards, taking place alongside ITB 2010 and honouring the best of the best in the Asian continent and its Arabian subregions, once again counted Malaysia among its winners. Malaysia was voted the second most popular Asian travel destination. In the category "Best Tourist Board Asia," Malaysia was ranked third place. Meanwhile the Sutera Harbour Resort Golf & Spa, Sabah, was awarded with the second prize in the category "Best Hotel Asia."

Go Asia is a marketing initiative that markets selected airlines, tourism boards, hotels and tour operators from Asian and Arabian countries in Germany. Travel enthusiasts from all over Germany vote for the most popular travel destinations and the best airlines, tour operators and hotels each year.

Meanwhile, the Malaysia Pavilion was awarded third prize in the Asia/ Australia/ Oceania best exhibitor category by the Cologne Business School (CBS) whose 30-member judging team were impressed with Malaysia's booth presentation, creativity, service and personnel, atmosphere, activities and information given to the visitors.

To date, the Malaysia Truly Asia international campaign has won about 35 top international awards and citations for not only its high-quality and impactful creative TV commercials, print advertisements and website but also its marketing effectiveness in helping to increase the annual number of visitors to Malaysia and yearly earnings from tourists. The campaign is deemed to have earned more awards for Malaysia than any other tourism campaign in the history of advertising.

The Malaysian delegation to Berlin, comprising tour companies, airline representatives, travel agents, hotel operators and four state governments (Penang, Langkawi, Terengganu and Sabah), was led by Tuan Haji Azizan Noordin and took part in the ITB from 10 to 14 March 2010. This was the 36th time Malaysia participated in the annual tourism exhibition.
