Ladies and gentlemen;

On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture as well as the government of Malaysia, I bid you a very warm Salam 1Malaysia welcome to the finale night of this very successful "Langkawi Naturally Magikal Festival" which has seen thousands of visitors through its gates since its official launch by the Chief Minister of the state of Kedah Darul Aman, YAB Dato' Paduka Hj. Mukhriz bin Tun Mahathir on 20th of December, 2013.

We trust that each and every visitor to this very august festival has thoroughly enjoy themselves and that along with it, the lasting memories of fun and exciting times that the festival brought would be firmly entrenched into their heart. To the joint-organisers of the event, Naturally Magical SdnBhd and the Visit Malaysia Year 2014 Secretariat, my deepest gratitude and congratulations for a very successful undertaking.

Ladies and gentlemen;

As you would have known by now, 2014 marks the year in which Malaysia plays host to the world for the fourth installation of Visit Malaysia Year since 1990. And indeed, we have come a long way in showcasing this beautiful country to the world and thankfully, the world has responded favourably. From less than 5 million tourists entering our shores back in 1989, we have surpassed many expectations, most notably our own to become one of the world's most dynamic tourism destinations. And this year, we're targeting 28 million foreign tourists, or roughly one tourist for every Malaysian resident.

We've been listed as the world's top 10 tourist destinations by UNWTO, CNN and Lonely Planet in addition to our capital city, Kuala Lumpur named as 4th shopping destination in the world. This, for a country that is considered still relatively young in given that independence was granted less than 60 years ago in 1957 is indeed a significant milestone.

And underlining this success is the rich diversities of our ethnicities, cultures, traditions and heritage of our people that remains one of the warmest and friendliest in the world. The very term, "Malaysia Truly Asia" speaks directly of our role in serving up the very best that Asia has to offer. In a word, all that essence of Asia can be found right here in Malaysia.

Enriched with rich biodiversity treasures from 130 million year old rainforests, pristine white sandy beaches, verdant mountain ranges and archeological treasures dating back thousands of years in addition to the countless of other fascinating attractions, Malaysia is a land filled with all the goodness and natural wonders.

Ladies and gentlemen;

The official launch of Visit Malaysia Year 2014 that took place only yesterday evening in Kuala Lumpur kicks off a year filled with more than 200 events and attractions that have been lined up for our foreign guests.

You will soon discover the secret that has been here all along... that Malaysians simply love to enjoy themselves, be it about food, entertainment or vacationing. And this year marks a special year in which they get to share it with the world. Just remember that throughout the year, there is something going on every day, come rain or shine. Check with your Malaysian hosts or friends for their advice on the "best going-ons" for the day. Likewise, you can also browse through the hundreds of listed events as well as other important information via the Visit Malaysia Year 2014 official website at www.vmy2014.com.

Ladies and gentlemen;

The Malaysian tourism industry is an important and integral part of the Malaysian economy, generating 12% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as well as directly employing more than 16% of its total workforce, and earning its rank as the nation's second largest foreign exchange earner. This year alone, we're expecting close to RM76 billion in tourist receipts.

What this means is essentially that tourism is an industry we cannot afford to neglect or be complacent about. It has become one of the nation's lifeline, affecting almost all aspects of our everyday lives. Hence, it is only appropriate that we take collective efforts in welcoming our foreign guests with our best hospitality. As such, this year, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture has embarked on a year-long education and promotion of the "We are the Host" programme to equip our industry frontliners with the ability and confidence to play host to our foreign visitors.

It is a national campaign, requiring the support and commitment of every single Malaysian to lend a hand in ensuring that our foreign guests have an enjoyable stay in Malaysia, leaving them with memories that they would love to share with their friends and family back home.

Lastly, kindly allow me to once again extend our warmest and most cordial welcome to all our foreign guests here this evening as well as throughout the country. It is our sincere hope that you will stay a little longer, extend your vacation here as there are so much more to discover, to enjoy and to experience in our fascinating country. For there's just no better time to do so than during Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

Sekian, terima kasih.
