86 Hotels Received Green Hotel Award 2014

86 HOTELS RECEIVED GREEN HOTEL AWARD 2014

KUCHING, 19 January 2014 - In a ceremony held in conjunction with the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2014, here, 86 hotels from 10 ASEAN countries received the ASEAN Green Hotels Award 2014, today.

The awards were presented by their respective Ministers of Tourism, and witnessed by some 250 attendees. The hotels received the award for their efforts to be environmentally-friendly hotels and adopt energy conservation measures.

"With the growth of the tourism industry around the world, the new trends of tourism direct to responsible tourism and meaningful tourism which need 'everything Green', the introduction of an ASEAN Green hotel Standard that defines an ASEAN Standard has been drafted", said Dato' Seri Mohamed Nazri Tan Sri Abdul Aziz, in his welcoming speech at the ceremony.

"The standard establishes a professional green hotel operation with environmental plan, green product, human resource and environment management which will enable environment and communities to benefit from a collective approach to operational professionalism", he continued.

BACKGROUNDER - ASEAN Green Hotel Standard
ASEAN Green Hotel Standard is one of the six ASEAN Tourism Standards. The other standards are including:
  • Spa Services;
  • Public Toilet;
  • Homestay;
  • Clean Tourist City; and
  • Tourism Security and Safety Guidelines
ASEAN Green Hotel Award is an appreciation to those who complied with the ASEAN Green Hotel Standard which adheres to green and sustainable practices, environmentally friendly and adopts energy conservation measures.

This award is held bi-annually during the ASEAN Tourism Forum and the recognition is valid for two years.

The principles of environmentally friendly is the requirements of the judgment, as stipulated in the document that notions the ASEAN Green Hotel Standard, which has been agreed by all the ASEAN Member.

The first ASEAN Green Hotel Award was held in 2008 in Thailand, 2010 in Brunei Darussalam and 2012 in Indonesia. Malaysia is proud to become the host country for this year.

The winners of this award were assessed and nominated by the certification bodies in respective country. Each ASEAN Member States may nominees up to ten (10) hotels from respective country to honor the ASEAN Green Hotel Award.
